Just back from Malta, where we had an excellent time. We stayed at the Coastline Hotel (see my hotel review for details), and, although we booked a couple of trips with the rep, we mainly used public transport to get around.
The trips we booked were:
Ancient Secrets, which visited the temples at Tarxien, the Ghar Dalam cave museum, and the Blue Grotto, with a stop for lunch (included in the cost) at Marsascala.
Gems of Malta, which visited Mosta, Rabat, Mdina, and the craft village at Ta’ Qali, with lunch (again, included) in Rabat.
Gozo Highlights, visiting Rabat, Xlendi (lunch included) and Dwejra, with the option of a boat trip from the Inland Sea to the Azure Window.

We also visited the “Knights of St John – 1565” show at the Powerhouse Theatre in Valletta, which, unfortunately, was spoiled by the venue. The show was excellent, but the seating was cramped and the lack of air conditioning made the heat almost unbearable at times. I understand a new, purpose built venue is almost ready, which will make a huge difference, especially as it IS air conditioned. Definitely worth seeing though.

I finally got to see the great St John’s Co-Cathedral – every time I’ve tried, something has prevented me getting there; even this time it took 2 tries. Still, it was worth it though! The whole cathedral is magnificent, but the jewel in the crown for me is the huge painting of the Beheading of John the Baptist in the Sacristy. Truly stunning!
The buses are as easy to use as ever, and the people seem friendlier, if that’s possible! The beer is just as cold, and the food as good, as I remembered. All in all, the Maltese Islands are wonderful – not everyone’s cup of tea, perhaps, but definitely mine!
