Hi Pam......

If you're going to bin it it might be worth taking the time and breaking open the root mass to see if there's any life beneath in the roots..

It L@@ks like the plant had a near death experience before you watered it and then drowned with your life saving attempt.

If there is life below cut back all the dead leaf and hopefully a new shoot/s should appear as the plant does propagate itself by multiple crowns naturally.

Additional reading....

Quote:
Plants require full sun and moderate watering. Rot will occur if the crowns are buried or the drainage is poor. Plants do best with frequent feeding, especially in summer, to promote flowering. Remove dead flowers regularly to encourage further flowering.
Slugs and snails are partial to the leaves, and Gerbera are prone to some viral, bacterial and fungal diseases.

pam....is it in a pot within the big pot? it may just have drowned from the off if the drainage was poor. This plant looks the type my granny had on a tray of pebbles to aid drainge/humidity.

Ah yes...it was!! I didn't like to water it from the top because I know SOME plants like cyclamans have a 'corm' (??)..and you shouldn't get it wet. As it was on the side of the bathroom sink I used to whack it under the tap every so often so the water went down between the plastic pot that held the plant..and the ceramic holder. Can I water gerberas from the top?? I'll get another one and see if I can drown that too!!!

have you tried standing the plant in a sink of water then when its had its fill put it back into the pot...no more water logging, and it drinks what it needs...
gerberas only live for a very short while anyway..and because the leaves are hairy they tend to go mouldy if wet..
